We are approaching three months since Diane had the expanders removed and the permanent implants put in place.  Diane is doing well, there is some muscle pain yet and those crazy twinges from the nerves firing off as they recover.  The amount of pillows Diane needs to support her while sleeping is gradually diminishing.  She can sleep on her side for short periods too, but she still gets sore when she does.

Diane has been walking, getting back in shape.  She had gained weight because of the reduced physical activity and the need to eat every time she took medicine.  The city has added some nice paved walking/running paths in the greenbelt (floodway) in the past couple of years which makes the activity much nicer than utilizing the city streets and sidewalks in the past.  The greenbelt is just half a block away so it is convenient too.

Diane’s mom is getting married in the middle of November so we will be seeing a lot of family and friends for the first time since all this began a year and a half ago.  Diane should be doing just fine by then and will be able to thoroughly enjoy the time with her mom.

OK, first the bad news.  It’s only bad news because it is no news, yet.  I’m not very good at waiting, for example; I can’t wait until all this is a memory in our past.  More on the news front, starting in the morning.

Diane called the plastic surgeon’s office to report on the drainage levels.  I empty the reservoirs twice a day, but the 6:30am one is the one that needs to be constant.  Diane is supposed to call the office once a day and report the 24hr amount.  Today was the first day she could call in due to the weekend.  Diane talked to the office manager and she told her the amounts looked good.  So now Diane has an appointment with the plastic surgeon Thursday morning and if all goes well the drains will be removed.  That would be welcomed by both of us, but especially the “wonderful, beautiful” patient.  (That was for anyone that thinks I am doing this to build up points with the “wonderful, beautiful” patient  😉 .)

It snowed more than 1″ last night, the snow stuck to all the trees, bushes, grass, and even coated the wood fence on the north faces.  The roads were too warm so the snow melted right away, the only areas that could cause difficulty were the bridges and overpasses.  The boys went to church this morning, while I stayed home with Diane and rested.

Diane continues to do well and make good progress.  We had a lot of rain starting early this morning, it was a heavy, cold rain.  There was snow at the tail end of the storm, but that was well to the north.

Bonnie came by this morning after the storms had passed and the sky was trying to clear.  She brought her special tape and a stool for us to use in the tub if we wanted.  We checked the tape under Diane’s arms that was causing so much discomfort, but there was nothing we could do to change it in order to take the discomfort away.  The tape is sealing the drain ports protruding from the incision that was used to clear the breast tissue from the upper breast cavity.

Diane is progressing nicely, she slept good last night in between potty breaks and medicine taking.  It was good that her wake-up times were almost perfect timing with the meds schedule.  She got out of bed early this morning and I set her up in my nice big comfy Lay-Z-Boy recliner, I gave her phone to her and I took mine to the bedroom.  She needs help putting the footrest down so she is stuck in the chair unless someone rescues her.  It wasn’t long before she had company from one of the boys.

Diane’s home and still improving.  I’m glad to have her home :-), but I’ve lost my favorite chair temporarily :-(, oh well… I will survive.  I can’t believe how busy things have been for me, I was wondering how I would be passing the time while at the hospital.  You know, with all the people they have there to take care of Diane what would I do all day.  That was not a problem, Diane was keeping me busy.  It was difficult finding the time to blog too.  Now that we are home we have two other helpers here, they can help with some of the little things that Diane needs too.

Diane is doing much better today.  She slept good last night, she had her little snacks with the meds to ward off nausea.  She looks good, her color is all back, and she is in better spirits.  She had her sponge bath today, yesterday they decided not to do one because of the way she was feeling.

The pastor called this morning and asked if Diane wanted him to come by, it is spring break and the pastor and his family were out of town for a few days.  We had a nice visit with him just before lunch.

I arrived at 11:30 this morning, I actually slept well last night.  The poison oak calmed down enough so it did not bother me during the night.

The nurses did not remove the catheter until around 10:00am so Diane had not been out of bed yet when I arrived.  She had already eaten breakfast, the morphine pump was disconnected, and she was given oral pain meds.  The breast surgeon checked Diane and had a little concern about the right breast so she called the plastic surgeon and asked him to come by and check it.  I was not here and Diane does not remember what the specific concern was, but the plastic surgeon checked the area and said all was well.  The plastic surgeon was concerned with the elastic wrap that they had on Diane so he had it replaced with a bra.

Diane is in her room now.  The nurse is getting her I.V. and pain med delivery system set up.  She is doing well, though groggy.  The plastic surgeon had Valium administered to help her relax as she came out of anesthesia.

The Valium will help her relax due to the chest tightness she will be feeling. The expander implants are behind her pectoral muscles, the muscle and skin needs to be stretched out to make room for the permanent implants.  That is contributing to the tight feeling she will be experiencing. The expanders are filled 50cc more than the breast tissue that was removed.

To be continued…

It is 10:46pm and Diane just called to let me know she arrived safely at the airport, where her mom was picking her up.

Our day started at 4:00am, Diane was up and starting to get ready so I could take her to the airport.  At 4:15 she got an automated message telling her that her flight was canceled due to weather in Atlanta, her stop-over.  The message also informed her she was being booked on a later flight.  We left the house at 7:30am headed to the airport, we go in to check her bag and get her boarding pass, the agent checks the status of the flight and all was OK, I watched her go through security, then I left to go get some breakfast before heading to work.
